The EIU’s comprehensive index, analyzing living costs globally, emphasizes Lisbon’s affordability. In 2022, Lisbon’s lower cost of living compared to Athens showcases its budget-friendly appeal. Lisbon has firmly established itself as one of the most economically accessible cities in Western Europe

Lisbon has firmly established itself as one of the most economically accessible cities in Western Europe, a distinction supported by the comprehensive research conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). This specialized index meticulously assesses living costs by scrutinizing more than 400 prices across a spectrum of over 200 goods and services in 173 cities worldwide. The data collection for this influential index is a biannual undertaking, taking place in both March and September, with subsequent publication in June and December, offering a dynamic snapshot of the economic landscape.

In the year 2022, Lisbon proudly claimed a lower cost of living when compared to Athens, the capital of Greece, positioning itself as a more prudent and budget-friendly choice for residents. Interestingly, this scenario saw a reversal in 2021, where Athens outpaced Lisbon in terms of economic feasibility. The equilibrium was achieved in 2020, as both cities found themselves on a level playing field in the realm of living costs.

Expanding our scope to other European cities, Lisbon emerges as a notably cost-effective option when ranked in ascending order against counterparts such as Stockholm, Rotterdam, Luxembourg, León, Rome, Brussels, Manchester, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Barcelona, Stuttgart, Amsterdam, Madrid, Edinburgh, Hamburg, Oslo, Munich, Milan, Reykjavík, Helsinki, Dublin, Frankfurt, London, Vienna, Copenhagen, Paris, Geneva, and Zurich.

Zooming out to a global perspective, the top 10 most expensive cities globally encompass Zurich, Singapore, Geneva, New York, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Paris, Tel Aviv, Copenhagen, and San Francisco. In striking contrast, Damascus secures its unique status as the most affordable city worldwide, closely trailed by Tehran and Tripoli in terms of economic accessibility.

Beyond its recognition as one of Western Europe’s most budget-friendly cities, Lisbon radiates appeal as an enticing destination for those contemplating residence in Portugal. The city’s affordability, as meticulously outlined by the Economist Intelligence Unit’s cost-of-living index, contributes significantly to its allure as a distinctive and sought-after locale for living, beckoning those who seek a harmonious blend of economic prudence and a vibrant living experience.
