The criteria they used included internet speed, tourist attractions, hours of daylight, holiday accommodation prices, and the number of coworking spaces available.
Lisbon and Porto have been ranked as the top two destinations for remote workers in Europe in 2023 by HomeToGo. Travel Off Path notes that this comes as no surprise, as Portugal has become one of the most popular destinations for remote workers in 2022.
Lisbon is the top-ranked city due to its many tourist attractions, numerous co-working spaces at various price points, and its status as the sunniest capital city in mainland Europe, with over 2,800 yearly hours of sunshine.
Porto, Portugal’s second-largest city, ranks second on the list due to its high internet speed, clean and walkable city, and a relatively high number of English speakers living there, making it an attractive option for remote workers from English-speaking countries.
Portugal has become increasingly attractive to remote workers due to its affordable cost of living, Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot summers, high-quality infrastructure, English-speaking population, and cultural and recreational opportunities.
The country’s combination of affordability, quality of life, natural beauty, and culture makes it an ideal destination for remote workers seeking a new place to live and work.
Furthermore, Portugal’s Digital Nomad Visa, which became effective on October 30, 2022, provides an additional incentive for remote workers to choose Portugal as their destination.
